Bollywood

Bollywood is the Indian version of Hollywood, it is a play on the word, chaning the H for a B standing for Bombay, which is the centre of the film world. Bollywood is extraordinarily larger than Hollywood, the indisutry is larger by twofold. Bollywood dates back to 1913 and silent film. The themes of the films have changed through the decades. In the twenties is revolved around the historical and mythological. In the late fourties (1947) the modern indian film was born followed by 'Masala Film' in the 1970s created by Manmohan Desai. These films contained action, romance, comedy and musical elements. The main reason for success within Bollywood is down to the star that is cast within the film.

The women dominate Bollywood, the most famous of them all is Kareena Kapoor, she charges $20 million per film. Other actresses that are extremely famous include Aishwarya Rai Bachchan ($17 million), Katrina Kaif ($15 million), Vidya Balan, Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra.

Bollywood makeup is all about the eyes, the focus is particularly on this area of the face, this comes from tradition as the culture has always focused on the eyes. Makeup is relativly new to the Indian culture, it has not been around for a long time, that being said Kohl was always available, which is used to highlight the eyes. The final touch was to add a bindi to the forehead to add colour. (Mickey Contactor)

“We have managed to change the mindset of the actresses by proving over and over again that you don't actually need so much makeup, and you don't actually need so much contouring. Now camera people light up differently, the lenses are much sharper, so you can't do the makeup you used to do 20 years ago -- which was so caked up but yet with a diffuser everything looked great -- it's not the case anymore. “ Mickey Contractor

This is true of most women that wore makeup in India, the style has changed dramatically through the years, slowly decreasing the amount used, however still applying a large amount of makeup to highlight the beauty of the face.

This video shows the most famous sequence in Bollywood film. It is the finale number for the film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, it is a spectular sight. The visual elements of this sequence are extraordinary. There are numerous dancers, with brightly coloured costumes and beautiful makeups. The whole sequence is immense, there is so much detail.

Bollywood Makeup

Bollywood makeup has a very distinct style, the face is contoured to shape the face, with a big focus on the eyes for the feature. The rest of the face is a beauty makeup but it all compliments the eyes. To understand the makeup better a range of photographs displaying the makeup have been displayed, these were used for reference to create the makeups seen below. These selection of images are of the most famous actresses in Bollywood, as mentioned above. The makep focuses on a dark black eye with beautiful shades of eyeshasow, natural enhanced lips with contouring over the face (however not obviously contoured).

Bollywood Makeup

This wasmy attempt at creating a Bollywood makeup, it used a certain amount of contouring, with the focus of the makeup being on the eyes. This makeup does not accurately reflect the elegance of the Bollywood makeup and therefore the second makeup was created for further practise. The eyeliner was too winged, with narrow colouration, this is too reflective of western culture, the eyes need to be darker to make theme a more pronounced feature of the face, the lips should also be coloured naturally to give colour and boost attraction. The result of the first makeup was not satisfying the brief of a bollywood makeup, therefore it was necessary to analyse the makeup to see what needed to be altered. standard. The second attempt would have more of a strong focus on the eyes, with slght contouring to pronounce the features of the face.
