Prosthetic Transformation Designs

In order to fully understand the structure of my portrait and to compare my model against the portrait of Archille Deveria I used Photoshop to overlay the two images allowing me to see the differences and similarities to create the most realistic makeup that represents the portrait. To begin this step I took a photograph of my model in the same position as the portrait, I then cropped the two in order to make them match up with each other suitably. I lined up their shoulders, nose and eyes as best I could and then began to change the opacitiy of each image. I found this process particularly helpful as I could analyse the comparisons in order to make my makeup match the portrait as closely as possible.

The two middle images show the comparison between my model and the portrait most effectively. The eyes match up very closely the right in the exactly same positioning and similarly the face shape matches extremely well. Both faces are long and angular which is a helpful basis for the makeup as I can build onto this adding different elements to build up a successful character. Deveria has a skull like head shaping on his forehead  with prominent temple shaping, this is an area I will focus on with the prosthetics to create a likeness to the portrait.  I have also noticed that my model does not have eyebags which are as prominent as the bags in the portrait therefore this will be my second prosthetic enhancement. The final major change is the nose, Deveria's nose is elongated and well surpasses the nose of my model making it an essential prosthetic change.

The colouration of the portrait is an important aspect to consider as it has a large impact on the way in which the portrait is translated, the hue on the portrait has a slight yellow base tone mkaing it an interesting aspect of the design to cosider. Similarly the shadows and contouring are important to the makeup as they are very dramatic and bold in the portrait. The tone of the shadowing is grey based with dark angling to the face, there is a slight touch of red/pink tone around the eyes which make them more pronounced and deep therefore directing your vision to them first. When colouring the makeup I will need to consider this aspect of the makeup. The shadowing is one of the most important asepcts of this makeup as it adds strong structural shaping to the face and covers a large portion of the face.

The hairline will also need alteration as the hair receeds further backwards than my model's, this elongates the face meaning that I will need to alter my model's upper head shape in order to make it match the portrait successfully. To achieve this element of the portrait I will need to apply a bald cap onto my model which will alter the size of the forehead and then I must apply a wig over to create the hairstyle seen in the portrait. Another major element of the portrait will be the goatee, I will have to create a moustache and beard to create this effect for the face ensuring that the model has fully range of movement around their mouth. I will have to style the two together to create a postiche that appears as though it is one section of hair.

Formative Design

These points made below are the initial makeup plans for my formative assesment. I had covered most areas of the makeup, however now upon reflection I realise that it is missing quite a few essential elements that would make the design work well.

Apply silicone prosthetic pieces to the temples, make sure they blend successfully into the skin. Apply with Prosaide, ensure the glue is fully dried on both surfaces befor attaching. Use IPA to blend the edges. Colour the piece using skin Illustrator palette.

Apply prosthetic nose to model, make sure to apply directly onto the nose tip to make sure that it all aligns correctly. Use prosaide for the appliance making sure it is fully dry. If using silicone blend edges with IPA, if using Gelatine use Witch Hazel and ensure to seal the piece on both sides of the piece.

Use gel to slick the hair back against the head. Make sure to use strong gel that will hold the hair in place. Follow the line of natural growth to get a smooth shape.

Elongate the eyebrows and flatten the shape making the eye appear smaller.

Colour the skin with foundation and then layer on colour from the greasepaint palette. Make sure to slowly build up the layers to create a realistic effect.

Make sure to glue the moustache and beard well to the face. Use Mastix, allow to get tacky before appliation. To remove use MME.

Make sure to secure bald cap well, glue all around the edges with mastix. It has to hold well in order for the wig to stay in place when pinned to the netting built into the cap.

Summative Design

After consideration of the outcome of the formative assessment I have made amendments to my design which I think will add to the overall effect creating a more powerful and realistic final result. I have taken on the notes given by my lecturer, changed the nose piece and created a different nose and altered the colouration of the piece so that it represents the image more closely. I had many issues with the silicone noses so I therefore felt it necessary to complete the close mould cast of the nose in gelatine and use this for the final makeup. I thought that this was a good decision as I could create very thin edges on the gelatine that would blend well into my model's skin creating a seamless finish.

Use gel to slick the hair back against the head. Use strong gel that will hold the hair in place. Follow the line of natural growth to get a smooth shape. I used too much gel in the formative and it meant that there was not enough time for the gel to dry forcing me to put the cap on while it was still wet trapping the moisture.

Elongate the eyebrows and flatten the shape making the eye appear smaller. Use dark brow and black pencils to create the shape and darkness.

Apply prosthetic nose to model, make sure to apply directly onto the nose tip to make sure that it all aligns correctly. Use prosaide for the appliance making sure it is fully dry. Blend the pre coloured Gelatine with Witch Hazel and ensure to seal the piece on both sides of the piece.

Create shading on the nose, use black and grey from the greasepaint palette. The nose has a prominent shaping that needs to be created from the shading and prosthetic.

Colour the skin with greasepaint and then layer on colour from the greasepaint palette. Make sure to slowly build up the layers to create a realistic effect.

Make sure to glue the moustache and beard well to the face. Use Mastix, allow to get tacky before appliation. To remove use MME.

Apply silicone prosthetic pieces to the temples, make sure they blend successfully into the skin. Apply with Prosaide, ensure the glue is fully dried on both surfaces befor attaching. Use IPA to blend the edges. Colour the piece using Greasepaint palette.

Make sure to secure bald cap well, glue all around the edges with mastix. It has to hold well in order for the wig to stay in place when pinned to the netting built into the cap. Make sure to place the thinned edge well past the hairline as it is much weaker than the rest of the cap.

Colour bald cap with red dermacolour concealer prior to colouring with greaspaint. Make sure to powder each layer thoroughly. Use yellow based greaspaint with pale foundation colour to create yellow hue of portrait.

Colour the eyes red, to give depth and make them stand out. Use the red from the greasepaint palette, create a rounded eye shape similar to that of the portrait.

Colour the shadow on the side of the face, use the greaspaint palette, colour using black, browns and greys, make sure to pronounce the cheekbone.
