Overall I feel that this project has been enlightening considering the level of research and learning that I needed to complete before the application of the makeup. Similarly, the level to which I conduct research and the depth and variety of said research that I look at has a major impact on the stylistic choices and makeup that I complete at the end of a project. I underestimated the amount of work that was required to create a successful final result. It is challenging to create a design that uses small and elegant pieces to create a natural, realistic makeup. I began by looking into the more obvious elements of research within books detailing the processes taught in class, however I believe that it is necessary to delve further into the subjects to get a well-rounded final outcome. I found that the process of writing up the classes helped me to further consider what I could look into to find out more information that was useful for the progression of the project.
The first step of the project was to find a visually intriguing portrait. After visiting the museums I found that I was not drawn to a particular painting therefore I took time to further look through various books in the library, scanning the portraits. I quickly found one that I thought very suitable for the project and decided to use it. As I was particularly interested in the prosthetics side of this project I conducted more research into that area, however I could have completed more on the other areas such as postiche and mould-making as they proved to be a crucial element of the project.
One of my weaknesses was not to allow a longer lead-in time for the research before the assessment time and thus not allowing me more time to practice the techniques that I had researched. This hindered me in certain areas as I could have developed more efficient methods and techniques which that would have enhanced my makeup. I also tend to not use my plan of products effectively during the final makeup, risking my missing out elements. I was not completely satisfied with the final makeup that I completed, although I am happy with some elements of my website concerning the research that I conducted. If I had been on top of the unit ideally I would have liked to create more prosthetics to give a finer representation of the portrait. For further improvement I would research using a wider variety of books and resources to give me broader perspectives on the topics involved.
The old-age sculpt was challenging as I am not a confident sculptor at this stage in my learning process. I researched thoroughly into the details that needed to be included and the techniques to create said details. On reflection I would have liked to have completed more physical practice of sculpting to improve my techniques. The use of reference photographs has proved invaluable as I could constantly refer to the features of my family and the anatomy of the human face. Overall I am happy with the result of the website and wish I had developed on the makeup itself through more practice.
