Planning Before the Shoot
Converse with the director and crew about the brief to ensure that you know exactly what you need to do for the brief. To work out day rates you must take note of the number of models and the amount of makeup looks that you need to create. The length of the day will also have an impact on the costing of your work, the longer the day the more required its common sense to adjust the price. Create visual sketchs, moodboards and references for the approval of the directors and clients. Some times you may be asked to the model castings to choose the model on which the makeup will be created, this way you can choose the features that will be best suited to the brief. You must work out the timings so that the shoot can be worked around. Always arrive to the shoot before the time given, this will allow you time to set up and get your bearings.
As further research into fantasy fashion makeup I looked into some examples that I found on the internet. I thought that these three images were quite powerful. They have clearly been thought through, with a strong design and use of colour in the makeups. I think these makeups are good as they have a symetrical effect the contrast incolours also works very well. There are areas of blank to counterbalance the areas with a lot of detail. If I am to improve on this area of my makeup skills it will be necessary to get a better understand of the colour spectrum and similarly the use of space and layout. I think that the only way that I will improve upon this understanding is to practise these types of makeups, create designs and implement these. I may start by recreating existing works and then develop on to crate my own and perhaps encooporate prosthetic elements as this is my main area of interest.
We were given a Treatment board which details the main characteristics that are required from the final result. From this board one must create a design and implement it. For this I was given a treatment on the British emire in a sinister and powerful style. Therefore I kept the colur of my models hair for the blue and white aspect and the red for the face. Clearly the makeup did not go well, I am extremely unhappy with the result. However I know that this is my weakest area of makeup. I also generally need a while to prepare and design what I want to create, therefore as we were only given a small amount of time, I do not feel that I was succesful due to the rush and my lack of experience. When I have more spare time I will try to improve upon these ideas, to crete more effective results.
