Body Painting

For the first session of the body painting classes it was primarily based around the background of a guest lecturer Julia Towend. She explained a lot about her background in makeup and the various projects that she has worked on. She also showed us her makeup range of glitters and gold leaf. It was interesting to hear the way in which she had approached the industry and the progression that she has taken. Although body painting is not the area that I am most interested in, I can see the benefits of practising the art as it would improve on many skills creating a more rounded artist.

These photographs below show a variety of products used by Julia, she has recommended them all for various uses mainly within the body painting area of specialism. If body painting is the area of expertise in which one would wish to enter these products are highly recommended.

For the second session of the body painting days, I wanted to create something that could look rock like as this is an idea I am playing around with for the concept of this project. To do this I wanted to use Fullers Earth to create a rock-like textured surface. I thought it might be interesting to use cotton wool on the face to create forms on the skin that would resemeble a more rock-like result. To do this I first applied a layer of Fullers Earth to the skin, then stuck the cotton wool to this area in the desired shaping, I then went over the cotton with more Fullers Earth to finish the effect. I placed cotton on the cheekbones, chin and the forehead going back into the hairline I wanted to produce a more masculine final result. This worked very well to change the shape of the face. The only issue was that it took a long time to dry as the face was covered in the product. Once dried I applied a mettalic purple colour to the centre of the face to create contrast and then proceeded to add colour to the Fullers Earth. To do this I used a fan bush with grey Aquacolour to cover the surface and finally added a black colour to the makeup using supracolour. This worked well to create the rock like result. However I think more consideration needs to be given to the colouring and the structure as rock would generally have a more rigid, jagged effect that was pronounced from the skin. Overall I was really happy with the result of this makeup, I think that it works really well as a whole look, however there are of course elements that I would improve upon on a second trial.

After that was complete we were told to create out own body paint perhaps using fullers earth and other materials to create the final result. I thought that it would be interesting to try to create a lava like effect on the face using the Fullers Earth. To do so I initially coloured the skin, the vibrant yellow, oranges and red to create the impression of the differing heats of the lava. The centre has a core yellow colour with red around. I based this colouring off of the photograph of real lava displayed below. Once coloured I mixed the Fullers Earth with black Aquacolour paint to create the desired colour and applied this all over the face. Once dried it created an interesting effect with the cracked skin revealing the colours beneath. The Fullers Earth however did not dry the same colour as the mix, therefore was more of a grey colour and needed a light layer of black over to create the dark contrast. This was completed in a tribalistic manner, creating strong shapes on the face highlighting certain areas to produce the overall effect.

This photograph below shows the demonstration that was given by Julia. It was to show the fundamental techniques of blending colours. However although the demonstration was interesting I do not like the result I feel that it looks rather amateur. The colouring of the fullers earth is a good technique to use, however it does not match with the colours on the arms prior to application. The initial blending of colours worked well to show smooth transitions and this technique should be taken and imprved upon in my work.I know that one of my weaknesses is colour and therefore it should be a priority to work on this, maybe through body painting as this generally works with a lot of colour.

Body Paints

Below I have looked at existing body paints for inspiration into my design, there are not many body paints that are creature based, the majority are beauty or blending into a background. That being said there are some very interesting fantasy body paints which combine prosthetics and painting. I have displayed some of these below, I like these ones as they have a distinct style with great colour choices and combinations. Looking at these paints has helped me to see how I could develop my project further if I were to carry it onto the body.

I really like this body paint due to the colour choices, they have a great contrast and all work cohesively to make a powerful result. The use of shading and contouring to create shapes in its own is interesting to look into. I am particuarly interested in the structures on the head as they have a similar rock shape to that of my project. I think the way in which the deep purple has transgressed into the yellow on each peak is an interesting technique to make them stand out individually.

I really like this makeup as it has a very distinct style and colouration. I am particularly intersted in the irredescent quality of the colours used to translate into the blue colouration at the back of my makeup. This comparison between the shiny areas to the matte results works very well with a powerful effect. The areas on the breasts are my particular interest due to their slight translucency and the pearlescent effect.

Mermaid Concept Body Paint (2010) [Online Image] Available From: http://baroque-in-babylon.blogspot.co.uk/2010/02/mermaid-makeup.html Date Accessed: 12/03/2015

I think that this concept art of a body paint works realy well. The pearlescent quality to the design is worth consideration as this is the style that I am trying to go for in the final design. I also think that the shilouette is very powerful with a strong structure it make a great impact upon the viewer. Trying to create a great shilouette will be an important aspect of my makeup and therefore should be considered from all angles.

The colours in this body paint are perfect for the resemeblence of the Japanese stone within my character. The transition between colours is beautifully created The slow change in certain areas works really well. I think the shoulder area works the best, from the dark blue to the lighter shade and slight green tint at the base of the head. Similarly the darker grey tones on the hand have a realy interesting contrast which could be emulated for a rock like structure on the hands and arms.

I think this body paint has been helpful to look at due to the continuation of the design from face to body. I will try to emulate a similar style on my character carrying the rock styling down the neck and onto the hands and these will be the parts mst visible. It is important to try to keep a coherant colour and style throughout the whole the makeup as this will make the whole effect more powerful.

Body Painting Yourself (2013) [Online Image] Available From: http://amazing-artgallery.blogspot.com/2013/02/body-painting-yourself.html Date Accessed: 12/03/2015

Unfortunately I have not been able to access the photographs that I took in front of the backdrop with a professional camera, however this is the final makeup from the shoot. I am quite proud of this makeup, as I did not have much time to plan the design. The overall look looks very tribal. The texture of the Fuller's Earth with the multiple colours paintedunderneath using aqua colour paints works quite well. I initially painted these colours and allowed them to set before applying the Fullers Earth Mixed with black colour on top. I really like the symmetry and the overall effect of this makeup. I think this would work really well as a whole body paint and could create a really interesting design.
