Durdle's Door

Durdle's door is a landmark along the Jurrasic Coastline. It is a rock that stands out from the edge of the cliff due to it being made of a tougher rock than the surrounding areas. The hole in said rock is also caused due to this difference in rock. I went there for inspiration to create my rock based creature, using the rocks that I found there I took a mould of a certain area using alginate. I allowed this to set and then peeled it off and cast in plaster so that I could have a more permanent version of the rock. I made sure to remove any left over material so as to not cause harm to the environment. I took many photographs of the rocks that I found there for primar research into the tectures and colouring of the rocks. This allows me to make my creature more realistic and accurate due to this research. I think that this trip was worth the energy as it has provided me with my own research into the types of rock without having to base my research off of some pictures on the internet.

As I wanted to encooporate the type of rock into my design I had to choose the style that best suited the structure of my creature. Therefore aftere going through all of the photographs I have selected the styles that I thought most suitable and displayed them below. I will have to decide what style I want to create with on my character as each has a very different and unique styling. At the current moment I believe the textures of 9 and 10 may be most suitable, however the structuring of texture 2 is also bery interesting and would make for a more interesting depth in the character.

Aswell as looking at the shapes and structure of the rock it is also prevelant to look at the colouring of the rock, to take note of the highlights, lowlights, base tone and the way this cold be applied to the makeup. I am particulalr ydrawn to the colour scheme of the texture 2 rocks as it has the lighter stone colour with deep shadows in the crevices. This contrast would work well when trying to contour the prosthetic. It would also be suitable for the character that has lived in the rocky mountains their entire existance.

Overall this trip has proved extremely helpful in the structuring of my character and the way that I will have to sculpt the prosthetics, it has also given me a good insight into the colouring that will be involved.

I really liked the texture and colour of this rock as it stood out from all of the other rocks in the area. The grey/blue tones in the rock were really interesting. I also like the way that the indents create a streamline shape to the rock, this may be due to the tide wearing out the rocks surface.

Alginate Mould

Alginate Mould

This photograph displays the mould that I took of the rock on the beach front at Durdle's Door I thought it worked very well, creating a successful representation of the surface. I made sure to remove all traces of the alginate from the rock after moulding so, ask to not pollute the environment.

This is an image of the texture that I took a mould of from the rock, I also really liked the colour of the rocks. The darker tone i the holes in the rock. Similarly the lighter grey tones. The green moss helps to bring dimension to the rock, similarly the brown tones also work in this way.

I really like the colouration of this rock the contrast between the white and black of the rock works really well. This is a colour scheme that I might consider for the rock, however I know that this would stand out from any environment that I would find for shooting the film. On the other hand that could work positively to show that my character is not just rock.

I think that the structuring of this rock works really well, the overlapping elements make a really interesting result. Similarly the deep groves have a strong impact. I think if you squint your eyes slightly the lines of the rocks look similar to wrinkles, which could work really well as an interesting texture.

I like this photograph very much as the colouring has a really interesting effect with the gradual change and the segments of lighter colour breaking up the colour. Similarly the outcropped ridges creating a shape that could be used on the face to create a unique design.

Rock Textures 6

The way in which the moss breaks up the structure of the rock, growing outwards seemingly as if coming from inside the rock. It also makes a very structured shape as though one large rock has been shattered into smaller segments.

Although it is not rock, the earth at the location had a really interesting cracked effect that I drew inspiration from in terms of the cracking effect at the back of the head.

Rock Textures 8

I thought it important to consider all the different options for colour in the rock therefore I took many pictures of the various rock structures around. I thought this yellow/brown colouring could work really well for my character to add some elements that make it stand out.

Rock Textures 9

This rock face is the primary focus for my character design as I felt that it had a great shape that would create a powerful design on the face and head. The fragmentation also represents the characters backstory and life which is an interesting element.

The area to the top left is my favourite segment of this rock face, the smaller pieces seemingly fit together. This could work in conjunction with the facial structure that I have already thought out for the character.

Durdle's Door

Durdle's Door

This is a photograph of the plaster mould that I created from the alginate mould of the rock at Durdle's Door I have analysed this from various angles to understand the shaping and structures of the rock. This has helped me emensley in the sculpt of my creature as I can have the physical form infront of me for constant reference whilst completing the sculpt. I pressed Monster clay into some of the forms of the plaster mould in order to have a physical positive representation of the rock that I initially took the mould from.
