Films

As the project goal is to create a character that will be found within a film, I therefore thought it necessary to research into pre-exiting films about Folklore and Mythology that had examples of creatures for inspiration. I also looked at specific characters from film to take note of their features an attributes which make them a successful character. I looked to these designs for inspiration in my character design, I took note of various elements which I felt would translate inyo my design well.

The Brothers Grimm

The Brothers Grimm was a film released in 2005 directed by Terry Gilliam depicting some of the tales of the Grimm Brothers. It tells of thier fantasy encounters and the creatures and evil things they come uon. It is a highly exaggerated film with very stylised elements. However there are some elements involved which are worth considering for the Folktale element. It can also be taken as inspiration for the style of film that I will create using my character at the end of the project. It is a modern take on the tales of the Grimm Brothers, however set in the time period of their existane. I think this would be a suitable route to follow, there are some powerful visual images within the film that are also interesting to look at for inspiration.

Fantastic Four

In the Marvel film Fantastic Four one of the main characters, the Thing, is a man who is subjected to cosmic radiation and becomes a rock-like creature. He is an orange colour with fragmented rock segements that combined create the structure for the ;arge man. This is an interesting case to look at particularly for this project, as it takes a comic book drawing and turns it into a 'life-like' character. I do not particularly like the result of the character design in the first film, however it is worth considering for the style and shaping of a rock based character. I have included photographs from the comic book the early naughties film and the new remake out this year. The way in which the rocks have been placed are good to consider as they have been designed for movement as a human would be able to move. Therefore they do not have large pieces that cover big areas of the body restricting movement. Overall it is interesting to see how a film has taken the challenge of creating a rock creature and the result that they came up with.

Troll Hunter

I watched this film for research into troll creatures that had been created for film, this film although CG has a great range of designs throughout the film. Although a lot of the design elements are not seen in the film the concept art displays a great range of deatils which all combined create a great creature for the film. I have taken some of this concpet art and displayed it here. The designs have clearly been thought through for each different species of troll insiting upon the fact that I must consider every element of the design to create a successful result. I can also see the 'realistic' representation of various trolls in their environments. It is also interesting how their colouring slightly matches their environment, as the snow creatures have whiter colouring. It is something to consider in the design process.

Percy Jackson Film Series

The film series Percy Jackson is based around Greek Mythology. Mythology and Folklore come hand in hand and therefore the creatures and concepts found in the film are worth taking note of as they have fantasmic elements and include relevant details. Looking at various exisiting designs has allowed me to see which characters work and deduce why I believe them to be successful and therefore I can try to integrate these into my designs and alter them to make it more original. The detailing in these films are particualrly impressive, although a lot of the mythical creatures have been created through the use of CGI and they are not physical makeups the concepts and portrayal of some well known creatures is effective producing a new style to the designs. These photographs show some of the characters found within the film series, they have particularly great amounts of detailing, although it is possible to tell they are CG. It is good to take the structures and certain shaping of the creatures and translate these intoother ideas and concepts. It has been interesting to look at the creatures from this film to see how they have combined the fantasy creatures into the real world. This is something I will have to consider with my folklore inspired design for the filming at the end of the project.

Jason and the Argonaughts

Jason and The Argonaughts was a stop motion film created in 1963. In the film there is a large cyclops creature that is the main villain of the film. This stop motion chracter was created by Ray Harryhausen, who is a world renown visual effects artist. He has created many icon designs all of which are a great inspiration when designing characters. I have included photographs of the cyclops to the right. I felt as though this was good inspiration for my project as the structure of the face and body is similar of that that I want to create in my design. The cyclops has a very structured jaw and horn which are the main two components of my focus. I really like the way the skin builds up aroundthe horn at the base. I might try to create this effect in my design. I also really like the shape of the earrs and the nose, I want to create a similar effect, however alter it slightly. I think keeping a relatively humanoid nose would be a desireable feature. Similarly one of the most important featres in the texturing on the face and body, this echos the cracks skin in terms of spliting the skin. I want to try to create a similar effect in my character. Looking at this design has helped me to see how I might acheive this look.

I have also included images of cyclops from other films below as I think they are not far off the basis of the troll, therefore the character traits that they will have are relavtively similar. They are all generally quite humanoid, therefore the changes that have been made seem uncanny. I like this effect as it creates a sense of discomfort in the viewer.

Narnia

There have been multiple films in the Narnia franchise, each with multiple fantasy characters with original styling to make them standout from other examples found in media in the current day. They must engage the audience and be believeable therefore the result must look as though it has the potentiality to be real. The character designs by howard Berger  have great amounts of detail and are  very impressive. I really like the way that many of the characters have horns and the shaping and design of them is very effective. The brow on the orc-like creature is also particularly interesting, I like the way that the wrinkles cross the brow and are cut off by the raised brow that follows the line from the nose. This could be an interesting shape to encooporate into my origianl troll before the stone transformation.

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Franchise

Star Wars

The Star Wars saga is a clear example of films which include mythical creatures that do not exist, they have been thoroughly thought out from their backstoreis to their design. They are complete characters even if they are not in the foreground of the film. This is a good base for inspiration in my project. Looking at how the designers have made the characters to suit their environment with certain features for the uses of their character. I have looked at star wars books to see these characters in better detail to understand each of the elements involved. I have displayed some below. As the films are so popular there is a wide variety of books available to look at therefore meaning there is lots of detail into all of the aspects of a chracter design. One my favourite creatures is the one directly below I think that it is relevant to this project due to the inspiration I get from looking at the design. I think that the facial structure works really well, everything has been balanced out in proportion. I also think I could use insiration from the ridges on its back for my character. Overall Star Wars is filled with incredible designs from which I have drawn lots of inspiration through structure and colour.

Clash Of Titans

Clash of Titans is based upon Greek mythology, the original was a stop motion film by Ray Harryhausen. The remake has much more advanced creatures and character designs involved. One such character is the one displayed to the right. There is a very rock-like structure to the face. I really like how the angles and placement of the rocks help to structure the face. It also creates a very powerful evil image, the eyes have a powerful effect on the overall character. The contrast in colour helps to create a piercing gaze that promotes a sense of evil. I will adjust the colour of my model's eyes in order to make the most powerful effect possible in the film. The colour will be blue to represent a cohesiveness with the stone underneath and the magic used to turn him into a rock troll.

Grimm

Grimm is a television show based upon the Brothers Grimm's stories. However the stories have been developed further and more advanced and modern characters have been added to the show. Most of the characters are human/creature hybrids that can turn to each character on que. I have chosen these two characters to look at as they have very pronounced wrinkling features. I really like the way the wrinkling structures the face and the deep groves add a menacing character element clearly depicting them as villainous characters. I also think the deepend eyes through the use of large brows is an interesting effect. The angular shaping adds another element to the design that makes them seem more powerful and controlling. Their teeth are also a large part of the design, which is something to consider, however I know that teeth are a delicate part of the body and I am wary to put anything in the mouth that may cause harm.

Once Upon a Time

Once upon a Time is a television series that has many fictional characters from fairytale stories. It involves a large variety of stories all which interlink in some way. In one of these plot lines there is a troll as one of the villainous characters. I have included an image of the troll to the left. The troll has a very prominent lower jaw which is generally how trolls are depicted with large, cumbersome features on their faces. Similarly the teeth protruding from the lower mouth are a common feature on trolls. I want to steer my design away from the original troll, as it is a slightly different race, it is not a typical troll creature. Although I think this design is quite generic, I like the structuring of the brow as it has a strong shape with deep wrinkles. This tells a story of the character, it ages him greatly. I like this effect as it also helps to sink in the eyes making them appear smaller and less prominent. I want my character to have small eyes in comparison to the rest of his face with the piercing blue eyes showing through.

Thor: A Dark World

In the film Thor: A Dark World one of the enemy characters is a rock character. He is a large imposing character. I really like the way in whih the rock seems to be cracked and fragmented in the structure. However I do not think that the overall shape of the head is particularly impressive, the head looks too elongated in comparison to the body. There are many features about the shaping and alignment that I do not think work, however the colouration and structure is very interesting to look at. I will analyse the colours used in this to create the colouring on my makeup I think the use of the darker tones in the cracks helps to emphasis the contouring and structure of the rock to produce an effective result. The slight tonal changes on each stone are also very interesting, and something to consider. Overall although I do not like the shape of the character there are elements which will prove very helpful to utlise in my final makeup.

Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare

Yokai Monsters is a Japanese film based on a lot of their folklores, it included the Kappa and various others. The film was made in 1968 and is therefore very dated, however the creativity is definitely explored through the character creations. The materials and effects available in that decade were significantly lower than that which are available in current day. They all have very exaggerated features and do not look particularly realistic. They are worth researching however due to their originality, the shapes and features involved were very unique for the time. There is also a character in the film who has a rock-like structure to his head. This is displayed in the last photograph. There are slight cracks in the forehead emphasised by the darker colouration. I like these slight cracks, as they are not the primary attraction to the character, they are a secondary feature, however without them the overall result would be less effective. This proves that the minute details make a difference in the final result of the overall makeup. I do not like the monotone colouring of the piece, proving that it is important to make sure there is a variety of colours involved in the paint job, with alternating shades and textures. This difference in colour wil help to make the final piece more effective and exciting to look at.

Daimajin

Daimajin is a Japanese film, made in 1965. I have not seen the film itself as it is very difficult to get hold of, however I really like the image of this one character. The nose is as I imagined my characters to be, slightly over exaggerated humanoid nose. Similarly the strong brow shape creating a menacing look, and the continuation of a design onto the forehead are both elements that I would like to try to create in my character. This is a Japanese styled film, therefore the components of the character reflect the powerful style of the country. Although I really like the general structure of this character I think there could be more detailing on the sculpt itself, it seems quite flat, however the character was made when a lot of current day materials and techniques were not available so that must be taken into account.  Similarly I think the colouration is interesting as it contrasts with the grey armour creating a dynamic effect.

Doctor Who

There are many characters within the television series of Doctor Who that have great desgns and concepts. Most of these designs are exceuted well, however although many of the designs I think work very well, there are some that I do not think work so well. However the one design of the Weeping Angel is very prevelant for this project as it is an accurate representation of stone, that has the ability to move. I really like the colouration of the stone that has been used, similarly the texture works very well. The way in which the stone has been created through the different shading makes a very interesting result. I think that these are a great representation of

the stone and they have an intricate level of detail that makes the design much more indepth and believable.

McCabe, B. (2011) Harry Potter : page to screen : the complete filmmaking journey. London: Titan.

I found this article in Makeup Artist Magazine and I felt that these makeups were really effective. I really like the makeups at the top of the page, they have a really indepth and engaging design that works really well. I like the choice of colours, with the pale palette and the darkened eyes. Using the eyes as a focal point works really well in the design as it creates a point to start at. I want to try to create this effect on my makeup as I feel that it would be an interesting element to the makeup. Similarly to the colour I like the amount of wrinkling and texture on the makeup. The brows have a great level of ageing which I would like to try and create in my chracters design. Old age is an element that I feel would be good to explore with. Another element that I like with the design is the cracked effect. I could use this for inspiration and detailing when creating the cracks on my character.

X-Men First Class

This article was interesting as it allowed e to see how a prosthetic cowl works and would make a really interesting makeup. It is something that I would like to experiment with him In these photographs it is possible to see how the cowl fits over the back of the head and the edges are extended below the face appliance to create a seemless edge. It is also important to see how the professionals behave in order to create the most effective makeup possible.

Sleepy Hollow

After reading this article and analysing the makeups I found them very inspiring in terms of makeups that have been created. The article talks about how they needed to create engaging and inspiring makeups in order for the viewers to return to watch the show.  I think that the creators have managed to achieve inspiring makeups. The use of colours and shapes in some of the designs works really well to help create a more impressive result than if other colours had been used. I have taken a lot of inspiration from the horned creature as it has a very stong fantasy quality and makes a powerful shilouette and effect on the viewers.

I have found numerous examples of the designs from the film franchises The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I have found these to be some of the most insiring designs as they all work cohesively within the same film series, however they are allindividually unique. As the Lord of the Rings series were created using physical effects the designs were created in order that actors could wear these designs with prosthetics. The hobbit was mostly created through digital effects, however they did try to create certain characters in the phsyicality but it was not as believeable in the final outcome. This mean that the designs had to be created to match the level of the filming equipment available. Which in the modern culture is of extremely high quality. This therefore suggests that the level of designs displayed below are the level at which I would need to create a concept for it to be suitable for use in film. Most of these have been taken from physical drawings to digital in order to create the colour and shading. This suggests that if I am able to create a comprehensive drawing and colour it using a digital program or take it into zbrush the result would be very effective. This way I could utilize the lessons taught in the Zbrush class that I took part in. Among these designs there are sculpts which were taken into prosthetic creation.

These two franchises are the exact style of world that I wish to create revolving around my character therefore it is important to take note of the common features and styles that are used in the concepts. I have looked at multiple books in order to see the various approaches that were taken to create these films. Two of the images below show a troll maquette that was created for the films, it has a very high level of detail. I found it very inspiring through the texture on the back and the colour scheme that was used. There are many trolls and goblins in the films therefore the designs below mainly revolve around these characters. I have found that the head shapes are interesting, they are predominaantly rounded at the top with the eyes and brow creating an angular effect at the side of the face. Many of the goblins have pointed ears, whereas the trolls have smaller ears that are flatter to the head. For this makeup I will focus my designs aroun the face, therefore I have selected the designs to show here that have interesting details around the face. I will try to play with proportions on the face to create a powerful overall effect. One element that I have found particularly interesing is the texture in all of the characters. The rock creatures at the beginning are engaging through the way in which the pieces fit together and work as a singular form. Similarly the horned creature towards the bottom provided me with ideas concering the horns and the way in which they fit to the head. Overall it has been an incredibly important franchise of films to look at in the inspiration for this project it has allowed me to think about the process of designing more indepth and professional concepts.

I have completed a section of the artist Andrew Baker on the creature designers page, however I thought it more prevelant to display this image on the page detailing the film as it has provied me with great inspiration concerning the structure of a troll face. As these films are in the style of which I would like to create my character it is important to take note of the stylised choices implemented in the design.
